Carolyn's Corner

Soap Opera Weekly

by Carolyn Hinsey, Published April 24, 2007

This week's guest is Thorsten Kaye, who is thisclose to signing a new contract with All My Children as Zach.

Carolyn:  What's the holdup?
Thorsten:  I didn't sign because what they said and what they wrote were two different things.
Carolyn:  But you're going to?
Thorsten:  I want to.  You know how it is:  The papers come and I'm like:  "Wait a minute, what happened to the thing we talked about?"  But I think it's going to happen.  I want it to.
Carolyn:  Did you get any guarantees about story?
Thorsten:  No.  I just said, "If you're not going to write story for me then don't sign me.  Let me go do something else."
Carolyn:  Did you get any time off with your new contract?
Thorsten:  No.  I'm not good with time off.  I like to work.  I'm not a good relaxer.  I would drive everybody else crazy.  Actually, when I'm in a bar and I have a few beers, that's my vacation.  I'm not good lying on the beach not doing anything.
Carolyn:  You don't want to go off and work on your craft?
Thorsten:  My craft has been destroyed by me.  If I may make a nautical reference, I think my craft has been sunk. Carolyn:  So no time off and no storyline guarantees?
Thorsten:  No.  You know what?  I like the people there.  They've got some great producers and it's a nice group.  Besides, who the f--- else is going to hire me?
Carolyn:  Come on, you've had lots of offers, you just don't want to travel too far away from your family or work for a lot less money.
Thorsten:  Yeah, and I don't want to do midget porn anymore.  I'm not saying that I didn't enjoy it or that it wasn't good for my career, I just think it's time to move on.
Carolyn:  You are a funny boy.  Do you think Kendall and Zach will have this baby or will she lose it?
Thorsten:  She just had a baby, I doubt she's going to have another one.  That could be good story.  Losing a baby is awful. What it does to a person and who takes responsibility and where does the anger go and what does it do to a relationship?  That's what soaps are.  If they lose a baby and love each other more because they go through it together, that's unrealistic to me.  Maybe it's somebody else's fault and Zach is going to be  her rock and then fall apart by himself and hit the bottle.  I want something a little different.  What if he blames her for it?  What if she blames him?  What if two people that love each other turn on each other and say "You did this"?
Carolyn:  If Zach hit the bottle, that would be a good excuse for you to let yourself go onscreen.
Thorsten:  I've been doing that.
Carolyn:  Couldn't Zach's ex, Hannah, be a good wrinkle in his marriage to Kendall?
Thorsten:   Yes, but I don't know if she's going to be around that long.
Carolyn:  Then what was the point of bringing her on?
Thorsten:  That's my question.  They have a talented actor there (Stacy Haiduk) who's stepping up and doing a good job.
Carolyn:  And Kendall isn't threatened by her at all?
Thorsten:  Not from what I've seen.  I asked them about that.  They said, "These people love each other, why would they be threatened?"  You know why?  Because they're human and that's a human flaw.  Of course she'd be threatened by that -- the same way Zach is threatened when he sees her with Ryan.  It doesn't mean Kendall doesn't love him, but Ryan and Kendall have something that is hugely powerful (a child).  Hannah and Zach had the same thing, and they also never had the chance to see "What if?"  We had scenes today where she said, "What would you have done if your father hadn't interfered?"  I said, "I would have grabbed you and run away," but I was standing out in the open and didn't finish my sentence.
Carolyn:  Did you not finish your sentence because you forgot the words or because that's how it was written?
Thorsten:  A little bit of both.  That comes with Zach drinking too much.
